Industry’s First Fractional-N Synthesizers with Integrated Microwave VCOs to 13.4 GHz!

Chelmsford, Ma 10/14/2009 -

Hittite Microwave Corporation, the world class supplier of complete MMIC based solutions for communication & military markets, has introduced a new line of SMT packaged PLLs with Integrated Voltage Controlled Oscillators (VCOs) which are ideal for microwave radio, military, industrial sensors and test and measurement applications from 7.3 GHz to 13.4 GHz.

The HMC764LP6CE, HMC765LP6CE, HMC783LP6CE and HMC807LP6CE are SiGe BiCMOS PLL with Integrated VCO RFICs which provide output frequency coverage of 7.3 to 8.2 GHz, 7.8 to 8.8 GHz, 11.5 to 12.5 GHz, and 12.4 to 13.4 GHz respectively.

Each of these new products include an advanced fractional-N synthesizer and an ultra low noise VCO in a 6×6 mm QFN plastic package, while requiring a minimal number of external components. The PLL/synthesizer section also incorporates a Cycle Slip Prevention (CSP) mode, which essentially holds the PFD gain at maximum until the frequency difference is near zero, reducing the time to arrive at the new frequency by 50%. A high frequency reference path allows the use of references up to 220 MHz, while source buffers in the reference path support both square wave and 50 Ohm sinusoidal reference oscillators. Ultra low in-close phase noise and low spurious also permit architectures with wider loop bandwidths for faster frequency hopping and low microphonics. Spurious outputs are low enough to eliminate the need for costly Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) references in many applications.

The HMC764LP6CE, HMC765LP6CE, HMC783LP6CE and HMC807LP6CE PLLs with Integrated VCOs operate in fractional or integer mode, providing the ability to develop high performance phase locked loops for point-to-point radio, military and sensor applications in the microwave domain. Primarily designed for ultra low phase noise applications, the internal architecture includes a 16-bit RF N-Divider, a 24-bit delta-sigma modulator, a very low noise digital phase frequency detector (PFD), and a precision controlled charge pump.

These new products offer the same exceptional microwave VCO performance which Hittite is recognized for, with the added functionality of an advanced, integrated fractional-n synthesizer. For example, the HMC764LP6CE exhibits consistent tuning sensitivity and high output power of up to +16 dBm across its bandwidth, making it ideal for driving the LO port of many of Hittite’s high linearity, double balanced and I/Q mixer and receiver products. Developing a high performance programmable local oscillator can still require considerable design time and potentially several design iterations. For these reasons, Hittite has developed the PLL with Integrated VCO Designer’s Kit which enables immediate measurement of the LO design to minimize design time, and facilitate rapid prototyping.

Hittite’s new line of PLL with Integrated VCO products uniquely combine the attributes of low phase noise, wide frequency coverage, advanced features and ultra small size, making them ideal for numerous small form factor applications.

Samples and evaluation PC boards for all SMT packaged products are available from stock and can be ordered via the company’s e-commerce site or via direct purchase order.

Hittite Microwave Corporation is an innovative designer and manufacturer of analog and mixed-signal ICs, modules, subsystems and instrumentation for digital, RF, microwave and millimeterwave applications covering DC to 110 GHz. Our RFIC/MMIC products are developed using state-of-the-art GaAs, GaN, InGaP/GaAs, InP, SOI, SiGe, CMOS and BiCMOS semiconductor processes utilizing MESFET, HEMT, pHEMT, mHEMT, HBT and PIN devices.
The JN5148 launches Jennic’s latest generation of ultra low power, low cost wireless microcontrollers for wireless sensor networking applications based on the IEEE802.15.4 standard, including ZigBee PRO.

It offers an enhanced 32-bit RISC processor featuring improved coding efficiency and up to 32MIPs performance, a fully compliant 2.4GHz IEEE802.15.4 transceiver, 128kB of ROM and 128kB of RAM to support both the networking protocol stack and user application on-chip, and a rich mix of user peripherals.

The 32-bit RISC CPU achieves world class performance through its variable instruction width, multi-stage instruction pipeline and prioritised interrupt scheduler.

The highest levels of on-chip integration also means that the device offers many new and innovative peripheral enhancements, such as:

4-wire digital audio interface that will connect directly to mainstream audio CODECs

Low power sleep counters designed for pulse counting in AMR applications

Time of Flight (TOF) ranging engine (with patent pending) for use in location aware systems based on IEEE802.15.4

The JN5148 sets new benchmarks for the lowest power consumption, highest processing capability and the highest levels of integration in a single chip wireless microcontroller.

Ultra Low Power Consumption

The integrated power management on the JN5148 efficiently controls the system power, enabling it to support applications that require the use of a coin cell with a 20mA limited discharge capability. With a system operating current consumption of 18mA when receiving, and 15mA when transmitting at +3dBm, the JN5148 consumes typically 35% less power than existing solutions in these modes of operation.

ZigBee PRO Ready

The JN5148 is Jennic’s ZigBee PRO platform. The combination of 128kB ROM, 128kB RAM and the 32-bit RISC CPU ensure that it is able to cover the complete spectrum of ZigBee PRO applications, with stack and application integrated in a single chip solution. Furthermore, with support for co-processor configurations it enables the addition of ZigBee PRO functionality to existing applications processors with complete ease and speed of implementation.

Together, the combination of Jennic’s JN5148 wireless microcontroller with Jennic’s ZigBee PRO networking stack have been certified as a ZigBee Compliant Platform (ZCP).
